Engineering framework

Theory, equations and conditions of use

The Rankine cycle pumps liquid, adds heat at high pressure, expands vapour and condenses the exhaust. Properties are read relative to the saturation dome.

Fundamento

Pump work

For an approximately incompressible liquid, the ideal enthalpy rise is vΔP.

\(w_p=v_f(P_2-P_1)/\eta_p\)

Fundamento

Actual turbine

Isentropic efficiency relates the actual enthalpy drop to the ideal one.

\(\eta_t=(h_3-h_4)/(h_3-h_{4s})\)

Fundamento

Thermal efficiency

Net work subtracts the pump consumption from the turbine output.

\(\eta_{th}=(w_t-w_p)/q_{in}\)

Engineering FAQ

Preguntas frecuentes

Why does exhaust quality matter?+

High moisture erodes the last-stage blades; the allowable limit depends on the manufacturer.

What does reheat achieve?+

It raises the exhaust quality and can improve the specific work.

What changes with regeneration?+

Part of the steam preheats the feedwater and reduces the external heat required.
