Engineering background

number of distillation plates and design methods

McCabe–Thiele solves stage-by-stage balances graphically under constant molal overflow. Fenske fixes the stage limit at total reflux, Underwood estimates the minimum reflux, and Gilliland interpolates the economic operating point between those two limits.

Scope of the model

Assumptions to be verified

The results are conceptual design figures. They must be validated against appropriate thermodynamic equilibrium, rigorous balances, hydraulics, composition-dependent efficiency, pressure drop and experimental transport data before any equipment is specified.

Preguntas frecuentes

Separation operations FAQ

What does the Kremser equation calculate?⌄

Computes the number of ideal absorption or stripping stages under linear equilibrium, approximately constant solute-free flows and countercurrent operation. Its central variable is the absorption factor A = Ls/(mGs).

How is Murphree efficiency used?⌄

Efficiency relates the actual change in vapour composition to the change an equilibrium stage would achieve. As a design approximation, this suite computes Nreal = Ntheoretical/EMGE and rounds up to give a whole number of plates.

What does the absorption factor A mean?⌄

A compares the capacity of the liquid stream to carry solute against the equilibrium slope and the gas flow. Values of A > 1 generally favour absorption; near A = 1 the equation is evaluated at its mathematical limit to avoid a numerical indeterminacy.

What does the feed condition q represent?⌄

q is the fraction of the feed entering as liquid after an ideal adiabatic flash: q = 1 saturated liquid, q = 0 saturated vapour, 0 < q < 1 a two-phase mixture, q > 1 subcooled liquid and q < 0 superheated vapour.
